Although the Federalist papers were written in 3-5 page New York newspaper articles over the course of many months in 1787 thru 1788, its nice to read thru these 85 papers in book form to get a good idea of just what the constitution authors were thinking at that historic time. A great deal of thought and debate went into the crafting of the constitution at a time where people were thinking of law for their progeny and preventing the horrors and bloodshed they had endured. I do not think anything like our constitution could possibly be written today without significant partisanship, shenanigans and jockeying for political gain and power.
A thoroughly enjoyable read in today's environment where it seems we are snipping and morphing the original intent, if not outright shredding of this tremendous document that has helped so much to advance human discourse and society.
I think we would be a good deal better off today if we related (and our lawmakers related) their thoughts from then onto lawmaking and law interpreting today.
Highly recommend, and its on the shelf at Acton Memorial Library.
Also, plenty of copies of the Federalist and anti-Federalist papers at Amazon.
